There’s a lot of choice when it comes to headlights these days. With higher end motors sporting fancy Xenon or LED lamps and several grades of halogen bulb available, your standard bulbs might be starting to look a little weak! When you come to change your head light bulbs (its usually wise to change both together) you might be tempted with an upgrade so its worth knowing if the extra expense for brighter bulbs is really worth it.

Xenon, or HID (high intensity discharge) upgrade kits are available in the UK, but with out a self-levelling adjuster they currently constitute an MOT fail due to risk of dazzling, so you may want to steer clear of these. A kit is required as the voltage from the car battery is not correct for the bulbs and a ballast must be fitted.

Halogens now come in a range of brightness’s, with some claiming to be 100% brighter than standard, and having that extra light could be worth the expense, particularly with many councils switching off street lighting late at night to save money these days.
