So you take your car for its MOT and the mechanic starts to talk you through any fails or advisories and you have absolutely no idea what he is talking about… we’ve all been there!

So here’s a few jargon busters so that you’re not left stumped at the garage again:-

Aspect Ratio – this is a measurement from the side of the tyre wall to the width of the tyre tread, it’s a way of sizing a tyre e.g 50 Aspect Ratio

Bead – this is the part of the tyre that’s in contact with the wheel rim it has a steel band that holds the tyre onto the wheel rim.

Driveshaft – this is the part of the engine that delivers power from the gearbox of the car to the wheels. If this is damaged it can be very costly to repair!

Particulate filter – this is fitted in diesel cars to filter out pieces of carbon that are harmful if they come out of the cars exhaust into the air. This part is the reason that in a diesel you shouldn’t run your fuel level too low as the bottom of the tank often has quite a bit of carbon particles remaining in it and can easily clog the filter.
