Not many of us have only got one key for our home. There is usually at least two sets of keys in a household or it may be that a relative has got a copy in case they need to come in when your not around or you accidently lock yourself out. Despite this, many of us don’t think twice about only having one key for our cars.
If you buy a brand-new car you will almost always be given two keys. If you aren’t given two keys then you need to ask the dealership how much an additional one will be and even see if they will waiver the cost as part of the deal price you are paying for the vehicle.
If you have an older vehicle or have purchased it second hand, you may just have the one key that you reply on. This can be risky as you may easily lose it which can be extremely costly to call someone out and make a new key (not to mention time consuming) but also it may become damaged or faulty rendering it useless. Most insurance companies will now allow you to add key cover to your insurance package. This will usually cover costs for replacement keys and locks if needed on the vehicle and possible recovery or overnight accommodation if needs be.
If you do need a new key cut you may find it cheaper to go to a key cutting place rather than a dealership but be sure that they can program it as well.
