A cars suspension is the system of components, springs, shock absorbers and linkages that connects the car to the road via the wheels and tyres. This varies on all cars and some cars have hard suspension meaning that you may feel the road surface more but it handles well and others have soft giving a comfier ride, but often in place of handling ability.

If your car is not handling correctly, many people instantly assume that it is the tyres, that either they are not good enough quality or that the tread is too low. This can be the case but it may also mean that your suspension may require some repair work.

I had this recently with my Vauxhall Vectra and after a trip to the garage they confirmed that the shock absorbers needed replacing both sides. This is not a cheap repair as the parts along as approximately £100.
