I suppose technically you could claim that this, the latest offering from Mercedes Benz, isn’t really the second variation of the A Class; the model did actually start it’s life as a compact MPV, innovative in it’s use of packaging and safety equipment, but not a form that saw itself copied by anyone.

Though you do still see a reasonable number, the older model was on the road for a considerable number of years, with only minor model adjustments over those years, so whilst the road volumes would have you thinking it sold well, it did not perform to expectations.

Accordingly, the wedge-shaped precursor was unceremoniously dropped in favour of a more conventional, hatchback as part of Mercedes’ big brand refresh, aimed at driving the average age of their driver demographic down.

This then is the second incarnation of that model, of which the best that could be said was that it was a strong first attempt. Thankfully it builds on that position – the car is longer, wider, and more spacious both in the rear and in the boot – two areas it previously fell short on. The looks have been suitably updated too, with a new aggressive face. Whilst sportily set-up, it’s a great drive too!
